Combing - Washing Trompe l'oeil - Marbling - Graining To cover wood or any other surface with layers of paint may seem an extremely simple business, but to carry out the work in such a way that the results are pleasing to the eye and durable requires care and understanding. Knowing what types of primer and preparation each surface requires is essential, and in most cases vital, to ensure that subsequent coatings not only look good but do not fail. Approximately 75% of the labour costs on any given job will be taken up by the preparation process. Also by choosing the right finish for a particular surface can not only affect its long term durability it can also greatly alter the visual effect. Sometimes a subtle change in texture or surface sheen can make or break a design. It therefore becomes apparent that in order to create a pleasing and durable finish it is worth investing in a superb, long lasting finish time after time. Of course plain painting be it on large wall or ceiling areas or on panels, doors, window frames and mouldings provides the 'bread and butter' for most painters. However painting and decorating is a very involved craft. The subject may be held to include not only practical craftsmanship but also a whole range of artistic studies. 90% of those 'in the trade' these days are not sufficiently skilled to practice the art of decorative painting and make use of its full potential. Plain painting aside I can provide the discerning customer with a whole range of traditional and up-to-date paint effects that include wood graining, marbling and a multitude of broken colour effects. There are no limits to the way a painted surface can be manipulated to produce an appealing decorative effect and the techniques employed to produce these are wide and varied. Each particular job done, though similar in appearance to other previous works, will be slightly diffirent due to the 'by hand' nature of the the process thus providing the client with a unique one off job and creative combination of techniques can produce some stunning effects. Hopefully the samples and descriptions shown will provide food for thought and inspiration for those wanting something different, special or historically accurate.
