Combing - Washing Trompe l'oeil - Marbling - Graining The beauty of marble has been greatly admired and reproduced since ancient Egyptian times and throughout history its use and interpretation has taken many different courses. Traditionally though modern day craftsmen have perpetuated the art that was most widely practised and perfected during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. In those early days of enlightenment when expensive, exotic timber and marble was used to adorn the grand and stately homes of the wealthy, those on limited budgets employed skilled craftsmen to fake these materials, using various methods and techniques. Such was the skill and artistry of these craftsmen that their copies were virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. Purely on a decorative scale however, marble can be more loosely represented to provide a pleasing addition or enrichment to a room or colour scheme. |
